A group of seven alleged individuals of German far-left organization face trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind attacks on sites in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
