Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not only the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
